Other than time of ownership, another primary factors to consider before buying either tree is what happens to your tree at the end of its life. That is how it is disposed of—is a significant factor is determining its environmental preferability.

The study looked at three end of life scenarios. Incineration, Composting and Sending to the landfill.

Based on Primary Energy Demand.

If your local community landfills natural Christmas trees, it is less energy intensive to purchase an artificial tree and keep it in use for at least 3.3 years.

If your local community incinerates natural Christmas trees, it is less energy intensive to purchase an artificial tree and keep it in use for at least 6 years.

If your local community composts natural Christmas trees, it is less energy intensive to purchase an artificial tree and keep it in use for at least 4.5 years.

Based on an average of 5 key environmental indicators, it is environmentally preferable to purchase an artificial tree and keep it for nine years over purchasing nine live cut trees.

Consider how your local community handles Christmas tree disposal and use that information to help you in your decision. If your local government doesn’t offer a waste solution, work with your government/waste authority to determine the best method for your region.

Also, If you are disposing of an artificial tree, donate the tree to a local thrift store or charity. If disposal is the only outlet for your tree, consider separating the materials for recycling rather than just throwing the entire tree away.
