Production Methods
In conducting the LCA, the production methods for the artificial tree were included. This included the production of raw materials like PVC and Steel, through production, packaging and shipping. Included also is the energy usage. The model considers everything over 2% of total cumulative mass of the product. Improvements to the manufacturing process would also reduce the environmental impacts of the artificial tree. For example increasing recycled content in the steel, PVC or polypropylene branches or reducing energy usage in the manufacturing facility. Recyclability of Artificial Trees is possible but requires separation of the key materials. Numerous manufacturers have discussed looking at ways to take-back artificial trees for recycling. However at this time, this option is not available. LCAs, like this study are not about marketing but rather about management.
